The Arrival of the ATM
Lake City Bank ushered in a new era in 1984: 24-hour banking. On June 13, it became the first bank in the area to install automatic teller machines—ATMs. Initially it installed two: one at the main office and the other at the Syracuse branch. Additional machines were added one by one, and each new installation warranted a newspaper article.
Though it’s hard to believe today, the concept was so new that the bank offered a promotion to encourage people to use ATMs. Each application for a card was a raffle entry; first prize was a color TV, and second prize was a TV-clock radio. That was enough to prompt 2,900 people to apply for a card, exceeding expectations. Once the bank connected to the nationwide Cirrus network, though, it didn’t take long for the new service to take off.
