Investing basics
What is stock investing?

When you invest in stocks, you buy and hold parts of a company called shares. You make money if the stock price increases and from dividends, which are payments companies give to their shareholders. By investing in stocks, you own a piece of the company and can benefit from its success. Investing in a variety of different companies and industries can help reduce your risk and protect your money from inflation.

What is the difference between stocks and bonds?

Stocks give you ownership in a company, whereas bonds are loans you give to companies or governments. Stockholders can profit if the company does well. Bondholders are lenders and receive regular interest payments. Bonds are considered safer than stocks but generally have lower returns.

How does buying bonds work?

Bonds are bought through an exchange-traded fund (ETF). This method offers several advantages compared to purchasing individual bonds:

  • Diversification: Bond ETFs typically hold a basket of bonds from various issuers and sectors. This helps diversify your portfolio and spread your risk.
  • Accessibility: ETFs trade like stocks, making them easier and cheaper to buy and sell.
  • Lower investment minimums: Investing in ETFs requires less money than buying individual bonds.
  • Cost-efficiency: Bond ETFs have lower costs because they track an index rather than relying on active management.
What is an ETF?

An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is a collection of different investments like stocks or bonds. It trades on stock exchanges just like a single stock. ETFs offer easy access to various markets and are typically less expensive than mutual funds. They’re a popular choice for investors who want to diversify their portfolios.

What are the risks associated with stock investing?

Investing in stocks comes with risks like market volatility, losing money, and company-specific issues. The value of stocks can go up and down due to economic changes, how well the company performs, industry trends and other factors. Investing is not FDIC insured.

How can I minimize the risks of stock investing?

You can reduce risks by diversifying your portfolio, investing for the long term, and including a mix of different stocks and other assets like bonds.

How do dividends work?

Dividends are payments companies make to their shareholders as a distribution of profits. These payments can be cash or additional shares of stock. Not all companies pay dividends, and the amount and frequency of dividend payments vary. When you receive a dividend, it will be automatically added to your wallet (for Self-directed portfolios) or reinvested in your portfolio (for Hybrid and Pre-made portfolios)

Is my portfolio actively managed for me?

Your portfolio is managed using a combined approach that integrates elements of both active and passive management strategies. Active management involves periodic rebalancing and tax loss harvesting to manage risk and maximize tax benefits. Passive management adopts a ‘buy-and-hold’ strategy where investments are held for extended periods to capitalize on long-term market growth and reduce the impact of short-term market fluctuations.

What is portfolio rebalancing?

Portfolio rebalancing ensures your investment portfolio aligns with your risk tolerance and financial goals. Over time, market changes and investment values can alter the balance of stocks, bonds, and other assets in your portfolio. Rebalancing involves periodically reviewing your asset allocation. If it strays too far from your target—for instance, if stocks grow from 60% to 70% of your portfolio—adjustments are made by selling some stocks and reinvesting the proceeds into other assets like bonds to return to your desired allocation. This process helps maintain portfolio balance, manage risk, and stay true to your investment strategy. Rebalancing is an ongoing process that is automatically managed for you.

What is tax-loss harvesting?

Tax-loss harvesting is a strategy to help reduce the taxes you owe on your investments. It involves selling assets that have declined in value to offset gains from other investments. This reduces your taxable income, allowing you to keep more of your money. Tax-loss harvesting is performed automatically at the end of each calendar year.

What stocks and bonds are in my portfolio?

Your portfolio includes a mix of 30 stocks and bonds carefully selected for you. All stocks are sourced from the S&P 500, and the bonds rank among the top 10 most traded in the United States. Your portfolio is always diversified to match your risk tolerance. For details on individual stocks and ETFs in your portfolio, visit the ‘Portfolio’ section and view your holdings.

Why do I have stocks from different industries if I selected specific 'investment topics'?

Although you’ve selected ‘investment topics’ that interest you, stocks and bonds from various industries are also incorporated to ensure diversification. This helps create a good balance in your portfolio and reduces exposure to risks in specific sectors.

Can I change my risk level or investment areas after I have created my account?

Yes, you can simply change your risk level in the ‘Account’ section. To change your investment areas, please reach out to the customer support team at hello@eko.investments.
